On ‘Treme,’ Magnie livens up the party
After a tease last week when the “Treme” producers chose a Tommy Malone song to end the show and the writers invoked John Magnie’s name [during the scene where characters try to guess the identity of a masked keyboard player], the subdudes — and John Magnie in particular — were prominent this week.
Sunday’s episode of the HBO series by David Simon and Eric Overmyer featured Magnie at a party thrown by the DJ Davis character. He sits down at the keyboard to play and sing “Agent Double-O Soul,” a hit in 1965 for Edwin Starr and which Magnie covered on his first solo album, “Now Appearing,” back in the early ’80s.
