Ex Fabula was formed in Milwaukee in fall 2009 with the purpose of connecting storytellers with audiences on a regular basis. All stories told at Ex Fabula events are true, personal, related to the monthly theme, and told without notes. Ex Fabula events feature several storytelling formats. “The Solo”, the most commonly used format, features a single storyteller. The other two formats involve pairs of storytellers; in “The Rashomon”, two storytellers share their versions of the same story, while “The Terkel” is an interview format. At the end of the night, audience members vote to select an Audience Favorite storyteller.

Ever since the first event at Art Bar where storytellers shared tales related to the theme of “Beginnings”, Ex Fabula has played to packed houses. The December event at Sugar Maple featured stories of “Second Thoughts”; the January event at the Hi Hat Garage brought tales of being “Busted!”. The February Bay View Brew Haus event brought almost 200 people together for stories of “Now or Never” and culminated with a marriage proposal that surprised and delighted the entire audience.
