The mountain man has come home.
With a stage full of guitars and drums and a trio behind him, Eau Claire native Justin Vernon (otherwise known as Bon Iver) came to the Pabst Theater on Thursday night to celebrate and perhaps re-create “For Emma, Forever Ago,” a CD that has been met with almost universal acclaim since it was released in February. What makes “For Emma” special is its atmosphere. Written and recorded over a three-month solo stay in an isolated northern Wisconsin cabin, it’s music of almost unbearable loneliness. At times, the overdubbed falsetto vocals sound like a Monteverdi choir echoing through an empty cathedral. And at others, Vernon’s solo voice strikes the ear like birdsong on the wind. Read More...
