The comic was loose and limber throughout a long show that moved quickly over a lot of ground in front of a receptive audience. He referred regularly to notes on a music stand to keep the show moving. One of the pleasures of watching a veteran of standup comedy like Maher is how obnoxious audience comments are deftly made part of the comedy. When one member of the crowd interrupted Maher’s take on George W. Bush by shouting, “He’s an idiot,” Maher quickly focused attention on who was actually the idiot. The comic acted as if the line was funnier than anything that had come from him, searching for a pen or a BlackBerry so he could transcribe the comedy gem to use in his next show. Read More...
